Need help/re: Bally's Total Fitness (6 replies)

Does anyone know how I can get out of my gym membership.

My husband signed a contract that is not going to expire for 2 more years! I go to the Bally's here in Fremont. On several occasions I have
attempted to work out but when I entered the gym I was told that the
child care provider did not show up...child care was running
late.... child care was closed for the day.... child care was
full.... I need to go to a gym that provides child care. I called
the main 800 # and they said that I could not cancel. They said that
I can only cancel if I move to a place were the nearest Bally's is
25 miles away. I do not think that is fair. I go to the gym during
the hours that they provide child care... so I think they should
accomodate me.... why can't they pull the manager to help out in the
child care room when it is full. They do not understand how much
work it takes to get your kids up, fed, showered, dressed, in to
carseats, out of carseats and into the gym only to be turned away...
this has happened to me about 5 times in the last couple of months.
Childcare is provided from 9am to 1pm. How hard is it to make sure
there are enough workers to accomodate the members during those
hours? I am so fed up and soooo frustrated. I once heard that it is
easier to get a divorse than to cancel a gym membership. I am
thinking of going to 24 hour fitness..... Does anyone have problem
with them... does anyone have any discount coupons?
Thanks in advance for your help... I know some of you out there can
relate and will contact me!!!!!

Bally's especially, as well as most of the large chain gyms, are
notorious for high pressure sales and wanting to lock you into a
long contract. Search the web, there are tons of sites and posts
about how people were deceived and taken advantage of. You might
find a hint on how to get out of it.

I'm not sure what it takes to get their attention, but this sounds like a perfect fit for "7 On Your Side":

Along the same lines as 7 on Your Side is Action Line through the Mercury News www.sjmercury.com.

Good luck.

PS  Check your contract's fine print.  See if it says anything in there about Child Care (i.e., that they will provide it, or that they will provide it "if available")  Makes a huge difference what the contract actually says.

not that this is helpful, but it looks like Bally's is and has always been
difficult to cancel a contract with.

lots of BBB complaints nationwide.  because there seems to be no way to end
a contract with them

It is unfortunate what happened to you, but is rather common. They are in he membership selling, not providing services.

I would suggest that you call the regional Mgr and explain why , you no longer wish to be a member. Tell them you feel they broke the contract by not providing promised services, if you get no satisfaction from the regional Mgr, then continue going up the food chain, to higher mgm't.

I go to Sillimans Gym in Newark. No contracts, no bull. They are a full service gyms. It is primarily a swin related, but has a very nice full service gym, with trainers available for advise.

I've talked woth a few people - discussions with upper managers might help.
also , you might try adrressing the dispute through your CC company.  also,
do you know any other people that use child care regularly at the club.
they may also be unhappy with how things are being handled .  More voices
might motivate the club to fix the problem.
