BMX BICYCLE BANDITS in Niles See all 2 replies

I am one of the so called adolescent boys that built this bmx bicycle track. Me and my friends built these jumps up by hand.It took weeks to do and  all we are trying to is have a little fun around town, as there is nowhere to ride our bicycles otherwise. Everyone is so concerned about the jump across the tracks, we have common sense when we are doing all of this. We had two people looking both ways for trains before we even thought about jumping it. after once or twice of jumping it it was no longer standing, it was just some dirt leading up to the tracks.   More…

it is the reail line...

The issue in the original e-mail was not the BMX track, even on "borrowed" land.  Rather a jump across a very active rail line, and to my imagination, the potential for a great thrill of playing chicken with the trains.   More…

Alert for parents of adolescent male BMX bicycle riders in Niles

To this quixotic conversation, might I add some more somber remembrances: The teenager killed at the Niles Quarry in the 1960's when he dived off of an abandoned dredge and hit his head on submerged metal debris.  This death did result in the City of Fremont enforcing the signed cleanup agreement with the politically well connected prior Quarry Operator.   More…

Alert for parents of adolescent male BMX bicycle riders in Niles

My only concern would be if one of the kids gets injured or worse.  In our litigious society, I can just see the parents looking for someone else to blame.  Liability is a huge problem and if it was my property, while I wouldn't mind the kids having fun, I would be very concerned about my liability.  I'm also surprised any parent would be in favor of this when the ramp goes over the railroad tracks.  This is incredibly dangerous.  We don't always hear the train whistles and the train ALWAYS wins.  While kids doing something constructive is good, they don't always make the best decisions, and putting a ramp across the railroad tracks is a bad decision.  We're always encouraged to call the police when we think there is danger, so the person who did this was surely acting out of concern to the kids.   More…

Good for them.  We used to do the same sort of thing growing up in Fremont, but then there were a lot more fields to do it at.  These days there are virtually no more fields in Fremont, it makes it a little more difficult for the kids to get out and do something constructive.

Alert for parents of adolescent male BMX bicycle riders in Niles

While I completely agree that creating a ramp near the railroad tracks is a dangerous activity, I mourn the loss of free play that children once had. Kids these days are restricted from building a tree house (see Park restrictions), running in fields (stay on trails), playing creekside (access is strictly prohibited) , etc... Too bad the police have been called when instead the parents could have been contacted and perhaps something else could have been worked out. I guess they will just have to go play their video games inside...   More…

There is always crime, but sometimes it seems quiet and people tend to get remiss.  I always lock my car, carry my purse over my shoulder across my chest, etc.  Some people think I'm paranoid, but I think of it as careful.  I value my life so I'm willing to take precautions.  I pointed out when people were reporting car break-ins, that we need to protect ourselves as best we can.  Why go to the ATM machine after dark if I can plan and go while it's light?  Better yet, use the machine at the grocery store checkstand, etc.  There are bad people out there, and if they can get into good neighborhoods, that is where they will go.  I agree with Del - always be aware of your surroundings and if something seems wrong, report it.  I think we are a long way from New York (literally and figureatively) but why not exercise the same precautions and awareness as if we were in NY.  Criminals try to pick on easy prey, so do your best NOT to be easy prey.  This isn't a guarantee that you'll be safe, but at least you'll be safer.  I don't want to sound preachy, but it's really important and people seem to forget that they need to take precautions, so it's meant to be a reminder and not preaching!   More…

The Morning Race Track on Niles Boulevard

Interesting idea!  We'd either get the speed limit to where it should be, and where it is safe, or we'd drive the others out of town.  Either is an appealing idea to me!   Since most of us residents seem to obey the speed limits because we "get it" and how it affects our town, maybe just a sign in our cars saying "Niles Resident/Speed Limit 25" would work since we'd always have it in the window and not just in the mornings.  It's easy to drive 30 or 32 mph before realizing it if we don't look at the speedometer, but for the ones described in the original message who are blatant unsafe, aggressive, in-a-hurry, in-your-face drivers, something must be done, and this sounds like a safe, legal way to do it.  Isn't it enough that a cat was killed on Niles Boulevard a few months ago?   More…

The Morning Race Track on Niles Boulevard

We could see if someone (the City or a Sponsor) could install occasional plant circles (or half circles) on both sides of the street that help narrow the feel of the street as you look at it from a distance; narrowing the feel of the street may naturally slow down the traffic. The Morning Race Track on Niles Boulevard

What about setting up a tag team with our cars driving 25 miles an hour, the speed limit, with Signs in our back windows advertising the speed limit.  We could take turns driving, every 2-3 minutes or so, down the street and as we are obeying the speed limits this forces the others to slow down.  As a neighborhood we could start enforcing it ourselves this way and maybe with an article in the paper saying what we are doing and after a couple weeks we could start to see a difference.  Just a thought since nothing else is working.    I would be willing to help drive the speed limit and slow others down....which I already do when driving downtown.     More…

Does anyone else on the group commute out of Niles between about 7:00- 7:30 a.m.? Have you noticed the speeds that the southbound vehicles travel through our 25 mph residential neighborhood at that hour? Or how aggressive the drivers are when you're obstructing their ability to go 60 mph through town? Or how they tailgate you relentlessly and aggressively, six feet behind your rear bumper? Or how they pull out and pass you over a double-yellow line?   More…

Large Orange Cat Died

Even though some may think “it was just a cat” let’s all remember to be careful driving in Niles and remember that all life is to be valued.  Niles Boulevard seems to have become a speedway for some of those on their way to Mission who drive according to what I call the “F-You” Philosophy.  I.e., “Hey, the speed limit is 25?”  Well, F-You, I will drive what I want.  “Hey, there’s a stop sign there? Eh, F-You, I’m not going to bother stopping.”  It seems there are a lot of adherents to that school of thought these days.   More…

I do not know anything about this, but I live right near that 7-11.  I strongly encourage you or anyone who experiences activity like this to report it to the police.  It does not matter if you do not have a ton of information.  Let the police have the information you know, and let them piece it together.  It is important to report EVERY crime to the police.  That way they can better track what is going on in our neighborhoods, and take action to fight further or future crimes.  Reports such as this is what determines where the patrol cars go.   More…

Sunday evening's accident on Niles Blvd

Interesting.  I didn't hear the usual tire squeals or any loud thumps that herold an accident.  I did hear several male voices but didn't go out to investigate because of the late hour and the problems we have been having with taggers, etc.  But the air has certainly been acrid from the black tire marks for the past couple of days.  It was especially noticeable Monday morning.  And the traffic on that section of Niles Blvd rarely sticks to the 35 mph limit.   More…

Does anyone know what happened? I passed by not too long afterwards, since the green minivan was still there. It looked like the minivan hit the divider outside the Thai temple square-on, taking out the signs, crossing over the divider and the other side of the street, and bouncing off the far sidewalk, back into the street. I seriously doubt that could happen at 35mph, and I'm wondering how on earth someone could hit the divider like that on a 2-lane road.   More…

Vandalism, center cap stolen

We live east of Mission, up against the hills.  I know this might seem trivial, but it is annoying, and  expensive.  Within the last two weeks, a center cap was stolen off of two of our cars parked in front of  our house. (The part in the middle of the wheel)  They were on the side against the sidewalk so obviously someone is sitting down by the car and taking them off.  I filed an on-line report with the police dept.  and  as told they will step up patrols in an area where there is a problem. I guess the only real answer is a prowling doberman with sharp teeth, though...   More…

Last week in late afternoon, a lt. gold(?), older sedan parked mid-street in front of our house for about 5+ minutes. The radio was loud and irritating. I was going to go out because of the noise but he finally drove off. Couldn't tell how old (fuzzy vision) he was but he did have a mustache. While it was unusual, I didn't think too much of it because what kind of neighborhood thug would draw attention to himself with loud noise?  Just strange, he wasn't local and most people just don't sit in their cars blocking the street.  And we are right across from Linda Drive.   More…

I just got home after a long night and have been scorned via many emails for my failure to mention where this incident occured. Sorry, but as I was typing this up today right after speaking to the police officer, I got a phone call as another close niece of mine was in labor. I tried to finish the email quickly and didn't review it, debating on whether or not to hit "SEND" as I wasn't quite through. I DID with the message as-is, failing to mention it was on my street. My boys and I had to head off to Washington Hospital and I've been away with relatives/watching little ones and two visiting Pugs tonight til close to midnight–so sorry for such a late response. I've been very disappointed that Henkel is moving so slowly to address this problem.
