Elementary teacher / mom available for childcare

I worked as an elementary teacher in the Netherlands for 7 years and have worked as a nanny for the last 3 years. I have experience watching 3 children at once. I'm nurturing, patient, organized and love teaching children. Excellent references readily available. I am fluent in English, Dutch and Frisian, and I speak some German and French. Currently I watch several children at my house, all part-time, and never more than 3 at once (including my 22 month old son) so the children get a lot of personal attention. My goal is to create a safe, fun and educational environment. I can help children that attend elementary school with their homework, like to do arts and crafts, reading to children, teaching them some sign language, go for walks, etc. I live next to a park with playground, in Niles. Please email if you would like more infomation. --Ingrid ingridwijbenga@yahoo.com

Pest control or exterminators See all 3 replies

Can anyone out there recommend a good pest control company?  I've been hearing scratching noises from inside the bathroom wall, and am worried about what is being gnawed on (hopefully not electrical wires!).  I have two indoor dogs, so I would prefer a company that won't inadvertently poison my pets. Thanks,

Victorian Home Restoration Supplies? See all 9 replies

We're searching to replace some existing dowels, and posts, on the front-porch railings of our Victorian home.  Is there any type of "restoration" parts-supply store, relatively close by, which carries wooden dowels, posts, and perhaps other Victorian style ornaments? We haven't found the same dowels at Lowes or Home Depot. (Ours is the grey Victorian, with the horrid pink trim, across from the church office. Many thanks,The Norens2nd Street

Cabinet Makers and Refinishers See all 2 replies

We learned, from a knowledgeable professional, that our kitchen cabinets are made of real wood. He suggested stripping the exisiting varnish, then prepping and staining to our desired color. Along with the hardware of our choice for the handles and knobs, voila! Real-wood beauty. We have taken our friend's suggestion and are looking for a seasoned craftsman to refinish our existing cabinets and possibly construct a few other new cabinets for other rooms. Many thanks! The Norens2nd Street

Christmas Trees See all 3 replies

For our entire lives, my wife and I have always had fake Christmas trees.  Finally, we have decided to get a live Christmas tree this year.  The problem is, we know nothing about buying a live Christmas tree.  So we would like to ask for some advice:1)  Overall (considering selection, tree freshness / durability, price, etc.), when is the best time to purchase a Christmas tree?  Is it better to get it around Thanksgiving, or should we wait until closer to Christmas?2)  Where should I go to buy a tree?  Should I go to a Christmas tree lot, Target, Lowes, etc.?3)  Are there options I should get?  I'm not even sure what the options are.  Do they have fire retardant spray, or anything like that?4)  What is the best base to buy and where should I get it?  I've checked on the internet and there are expensive ones that run up to $79!  That expensive one swivels and comes with a water reservoir.  Do I need all of that, or is it good enough to just mount the tree to two pieces of wood crossed together like an "X"?5)  Anything else I need to know? Thanks for any tips you can give us!SteveKing Ct.

Garden soil? See all 5 replies

Does anyone have a recommendation for a place in the area that sells soilappropriate for filling a raised bed?We bought some soil last summer from the place that is next to Navlet's.Years before we had purchased soil from the same place but I think it wasunder different ownership--at least it had a different name. That time thesoil worked well enough.Last summer I called and talked to the guy about what to buy for numerouslarge containers and I ordered whatever he recommended--can't remember whatit was--probably topsoil. The stuff we got doesn't seem to be able tosustain plant life. It had a strong menthol smell when they dumped it. Evenwith heavy amendments of compost, soil builder and fertilizer, I am having alow success rate.I have a recommendation that sounds and looks great but the place is on thepeninsula and if I can get it closer to home I'd prefer it. I'm looking forhealthy, compost-y gardening soil, preferably delivered. One of my neighbors recommended Tri-City Rock. Does anyone have specificadvice or info about local resources?ThanksMaria MoeschHacienda Gardens

Under sink Water Filter See reply

I'm currently have Alhambra Water delivered to my house, however, the jug and stand take up a lot of room in my kitchen. Is anyone happy with their under sink water filter? I'm not looking for a whole house filter, just one for the kitchen sink. I don't like the smell or chemical taste of Fremont's water, but otherwise I'm sure it's safe to drink.Any suggestions or recommendations would be great.Thanks,Kely2nd

I've just gotten a quote for Anderson brand French doors from Quality Windows and Doors located in Pleasanton.  I like this company very much and appreciate that they're still in business, but I'd like to get some other quotes from other reputable window/door companies that also do their own installation. I'll appreciate any recommendations.   NancyD St.

Need help/re: Bally's Total Fitness See all 6 replies

Does anyone know how I can get out of my gym membership. My husband signed a contract that is not going to expire for 2 more years! I go to the Bally's here in Fremont. On several occasions I have attempted to work out but when I entered the gym I was told that the child care provider did not show up...child care was running late.... child care was closed for the day.... child care was full.... I need to go to a gym that provides child care. I called the main 800 # and they said that I could not cancel. They said that I can only cancel if I move to a place were the nearest Bally's is 25 miles away. I do not think that is fair. I go to the gym during the hours that they provide child care... so I think they should accomodate me.... why can't they pull the manager to help out in the child care room when it is full. They do not understand how much work it takes to get your kids up, fed, showered, dressed, in to carseats, out of carseats and into the gym only to be turned away... this has happened to me about 5 times in the last couple of months. Childcare is provided from 9am to 1pm. How hard is it to make sure there are enough workers to accomodate the members during those hours? I am so fed up and soooo frustrated. I once heard that it is easier to get a divorse than to cancel a gym membership. I am thinking of going to 24 hour fitness..... Does anyone have problem with them... does anyone have any discount coupons? Thanks in advance for your help... I know some of you out there can relate and will contact me!!!!! NormaNiles Blvd

In home care See all 2 replies

I am hoping someone out here can pass along a little advice. My husband and I are about to begin to search for someone to provide daily care for his elderly mother at her home in Santa Clara. She is in reasonably good health, but has some dementia and hearing loss. It would probably be a Monday – Friday position, 6 – 8 hours per day. Housekeeping, meal preparation, provide transportation to/from medical appointments, are a few of the job duties. I have no clue how to go about this whole process. Have any of you hired this sort of person before? Do you have any good guidelines/suggestions? What kind of pay range can you expect? Any info you can pass along would be appreciated. thanks, tori snyder d street

Yoga See all 2 replies

I'm looking for a venue to take yoga once or twice a week.  An ideal setting would have a comfortable social atmosphere and an instructor with a fun loving, casual attitude.  A drop in schedule would work best for me.  A few years ago I injured my back, and occasionally I have discomfort.  I'm told yoga would strengthen back muscles and alleviate some of the pain.  Ten days ago I pinched a nerve, so the sooner I start the better.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. DavidNiles School
