Niles is the heart, the peace without building. I can drive down 680 S and see all the hill development. It's sick. I can head north on Mission and see everything in Hayward. All the building on the hills. It's nice to have a break and respect wilderness between Milpitas and Hayward, on our open hills. -- Colleen Riviera Dr.

Removal of Trees from Trail See all 2 replies

I am not aware of the palm trees that you are speaking of, but I did notice that quite a large number(I think at least 20) large mature trees were removed from the Niles side of the Alameda Creek trail nearShinn Pond this week. It is very sad to see...I hope that there was agood reason for the removal and replanting is on the agenda. Ifanyone has insight on this I'd love to hear about it.KellyJ Street

Fremont Planning Commission meeting on cell phone tower at Mission and Nursery

Last week I spent half an hour with Terry Wong, the city planner in charge of the proposed cell phone tower at Nursery and Mission. There will be a meeting tomorrow (6/28) at 7 p.m. at Council Chambers, 3300 Capitol Ave., to consider a Conditional Use Permit for this project. Mr. Wong was very patient in dealing with me. He gave me three simulation pictures of the 87-foot stealth mono-pine, two perspectives from Nursery and one from Mission Blvd. Actually, I was surprised at how relatively unobtrusive the installation appears; however, the few such "stealth mono-pines" (their term, not mine) I have seen leave quite a bit to be desired. The equipment is to be installed immediately in back of Dave's Foreign Auto, among several fir trees just east of the Union Pacific tracks, about 155 feet from the Hayward Fault. He also provided safety information regarding microwave radiation, a rather abstruse report generated by the firm Hammett and Edison, Inc., Consulting Engineers retained by T-Mobile. The upshot, Wong says, is that the structure will generate .23% of the federal daily maximum exposure if two panels are attached. What will happen if/when T-Mobile rents out the two lower panel spaces, I do not know.Any thoughts? Come to the meeting for more information!__._,_.___

Update on cell tower proposal for Nursery and Mission See all 8 replies

Because of an impacted agenda, the Fremont Planning Commission tabled the T-Mobile cell tower/"stealth" pine proposal until July 12, 7 p.m., at City Council Chambers, 3300 Capitol Ave. If you have any questions or concerns, contact Terry Wong, the city planner in charge of the project, at 494-4456. If you wish to join a group exploring health, seismic, and/or aesthetic ramifications of the proposal, contact Patty Allen. We hope to hear your thoughts on the matter, especially given that such installations likely will be placed closer and closer to residential areas in the future.

Driving/Parking Issue in Downtown Niles See all 10 replies

Does anyone know if there is anything we can do to make it safer for business customers to back out of the angled parking spaces along the west side of Niles Boulevard downtown? On numerous occasions, I've come close to being hit while backing out of them. So, when I'm driving through there and someone is trying to back out, I always stop and let them. I believe the oncoming traffic has the right-of-way, but what can you do when you can't SEE the oncoming traffic, you need to back out, and you don't have a passenger who can get out, lay down on the pavement twenty feet upstream of your space, and pretend to have a heart attack or convulsions for long enough that you can safely exit a parking space?? Are speed bumps a possibility? Or are there any other creative ideas as to how we could make that downtown angled-parking area more "exit friendly"? Del on Niles Boulevard

Rehab Center See all 5 replies

Your e-mail was pretty thorough on all the possibilities for conjestion and shortcuts, but I'd like to add one more "new nightmare" to our end of Linda Dr. That new rehab center that went in between the church and the overpass. People are stopping on Niles Blvd.to turn left into the center, and slowing down coming from over the overpass to turn right into the driveway. Extremely Dangerous addition to an already bad intersection. People coming and going should really be encouraged to use the other driveway leading into the church.PaulaLinda Dr

Niles Blvd. connector to KB Homes on Fremont Agenda See all 4 replies

Not sure of how many of you are aware that Niles Blvd. continues on down through to the KB Homes in Union City. This is just before the over pass, if you are to stay to the right and continue on it will lead to the KB HOMES IN UNION CITY. When this development was being presented it was stated that Gold street where Niles Ends was to be closed off at the end of Niles once the access on Decoto was available. Well now that the project is well underway and they are about to start building more homes they want to leave the access open, even though they now have access on Decoto; instead of complying with what was promised originally. (to my understanding, this is documented). The traffic situation is already increasingly worse. This is to be discussed at Tuesday's meeting here is the link if you are interested. Item 5.2 on the Agenda.http://www.fremont.gov/CityHall/CouncilMeetings/meeting070109ccag.htmAll this does is allow more cars/traffic that rightfully belongs to Union City and Not our little town! It is hard enough to cross over back on to Niles Blvd. with the way things are now, it will only get worse if this is to remain open.I urge you to write or attend the meeting so that they are forced to comply with the street closure, instead of being able to say one thing just to get what they want and then do another because they never intended on keeping their promise in the first place! Thank you for your time.TammyNiles Blvd.

We gonna make it dadgum purty 'round 'ere See all 4 replies

You expounded in true Broncho Billy fashion, "we gonna make it dadgum  purty 'round 'ere!"  Sure enough!  Let's call this movement CUSS  (Clean Up Scruffy Sites). And great news, by golly!  I received an  immediate and heartening return call yesterday from City of Fremont  Street Maintenance Supervisor, Fred Hebener. Yes folks, there are good guys galloping in on white horses. He will be emailing me the  details for a City of Fremont-supported Niles  clean-up. Hats off to  Mr. Hebener!Niles Main Street has contacted me regarding possible funding for on- going maintenance. Many individuals have pledged donations, tools and  supplies. Let's thank the City, Main Street, and all our Niles  neighbors for stepping up. And while we're at it, a big whoop for  those who regularly paint over graffiti, maintain their homes and  stores, renovate and restore Niles landscaping and structures. And, oh, how about having clean-up volunteers dressing up in old  timey western wear - jeans, boot and cowboy hats! Let's have fun and  CUSS, dang burn it!  Cathy Lyn, Washburn

Niles Clean-Up See all 3 replies

I've peppered the e-group recently with comments about roadside garbage and derelict buildings in Niles. I got off my soapbox today and tackled the trash and weeds that ugh up our image. To start, I'm focusing on our front door  - the Niles Boulevard corridor from Mission to the car wash (and the wooden Niles sign hidden behind a tree). A couple of hardworking Niles folks pitched in this afternoon to weed, sweep and haul trash and wet leaves away from the sidewalk in front of the Henkel building. I'm asking for more help. Please let me know if you will donate a dollar or two, have an empty dumpster available, trash and / or leaf bags, a pick-up truck for hauling refuse to the landfill, or a half-hour of spare time. If you are a landscaper and willing to donate some trimming, etc., you will earn much praise and admiration! Some good neighbors and I are going door-to-door on Niles Blvd. this Sunday, February 26, asking for a donation of only $1 or $2 from each business to help pay for the initial clean-up, and a start-up fund for on-going maintenance. Please join me in helping Niles get ready for her close-up, as folks pour in for the glorious events produced by the Niles Essanay Silent Film Museum, Niles Main Street, Niles Merchants, the Niles Canyon Railway / Golden Spike Program, Michael McNevin, the City of Fremont, Niles Elementary School and all the other groups and individuals who make us great. Niles will look mahvelous dahlings! Thank you. Cathy Lyn Harrison, Washburn

The California Regional Water Quality Control Board has announced a cleanup plan for the Henkel site.  This cleanup is for the herbicide 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) pollution.  We as neighbors to the site have been contacted directly and we have complied with our concerns and requests in writing. RoseThird Street
