I agree about Wholehouse Building Supply, but I think they have moved and I'm afraid I do not know where to. The Pulgas location may have the new address posted, or you may want to try information. I remember seeing that they were moving maybe at the end of December or the end of January. I cannot remember which. Just FYI.

Wholehouse building supply on Pulgas Rd in East Palo Alto has all kinds of old home stuff. They salvage from homes slated for demo on the peninsula. They have demo sales prior to the demolition where you can go to the house and take whatever you want (for a fee) then whatever is left goes to there yard.

We're searching to replace some existing dowels, and posts, on the front-porch railings of our Victorian home. Is there any type of "restoration" parts-supply store, relatively close by, which carries wooden dowels, posts, and perhaps other Victorian style ornaments? We haven't found the same dowels at Lowes or Home Depot. (Ours is the grey Victorian, with the horrid pink trim, across from the church office.

Mr. Le's Marine Services

You can try Mr. Le's Marine Services (http://www.mrlemarine.com/). He is supposed to be very honest and an all around good guy. I heard he was fired from is last job because he told a customer that he really didn't need certain work. So he opened up his own shop. Word spread fast and now he is swamped with work. He's trained in Evinrude (which is what I have), but I'm not sure about Mercury. You will have to ask him about that.

Pest control or exterminators
|
|
A while back, I had asked for the same recommendation from this group. I was given recommendations for a few companies, but all of them only dealt with insect and/or termite control. I started researching this issue and was told that there are basically two companies that handle this type of situation (where you have an animal intruding onto your property). I thought that there were pest control places that would handle rodent trapping, but I had a hard time finding one in the tri-cities area. There were some in San Jose, but none would travel to Fremont. I was given two recommendations by one the San Jose folks. Animal Damage Management based in Morgan Hill and Critter Control based in Walnut Creek.

Christmas Trees
|
|
The two most popular trees for Christmas decorating appear to be the Scotch Pine (long needles in clusters thus a full-looking tree) and the Douglas Fir (the more expensive one, with shorter needles all along each branch - thus ornaments are more easily seen as well as the individual branches). Usually after you get one home, you still need to saw off the first inch or two since often some of those trees may have been sitting in the lot awhile..

Now have artificial tree
|
|
We got tired of paying for trees, thus we now have artificial tree (After Christmas sale at Target 50% off). $79 is cheap! I believe the trees are all cut the same time, so the sooner you buy it and and get it in water the better. It is very important to not let the water dry out, or it may seal and not absorb more water. Definately need a water resevoir unless you get it the last minute and it's up less than a week. The swivel stand is great for decorating... especially when putting the lights on. Young Life has a Christmas lot, so the profits stay local (there are probably other non-profits that have lots too). Your choices are basically 2 kinds of tree, one is cheaper than the other, but it all depends on what you like. I prefer the more expensive one (I forget the names of each), as the limbs are sturdier, the needles shorter and you can see your ornaments better. Flocking is an option (looks like snow)... very messy and you can't recycle the tree. Fire retardant not necessary if you keep the tree well watered, check lights are in good shape and don't leave the lights on when you're not home. The taller the tree the more expensive. Another option is a live tree that you can then plant in your yard. Some folks like to travel to a Christmas tree farm (look on internet) and go and chop their own down.

Yes, Tri-City is fine. Ask for their planter mix, which has a fair amount of mulch mixed into it. With an organic starter product and occasional feedings of Osmocote, most everything has grown like weeds for almost three years.

We use them for our old cars (husband's old el camino, my '81 corvette), and our new cars. I had always had dealer service on my new cars until they were out of warranty, but am so pleased with The Shop I take everything there now. He always prints out the factory service requirements so I see that he's doing exactly what they would do at the dealership, my Honda's 30k service was just about half the price of what the dealer would have charged me.tori

When we questioned him about it he quit the job (left it unfinished) and without even the courtesy of calling us, he discontinued his sons crew from doing our weekly maintenance (his son Aldo we would have recommended). Well, I have to respectfully disagree. Our experience was different. He also put in our sprinkler system, adjusted it as necessary and it continues to work fine now. That was some number of years ago. He has come regularly and reliably for at least five years. His sons are also very nice. He has also pruned my trees without requesting extra money, drove all the way to my mother's house in San Carlos as a favor to us to do her yard, put up wires for our wisteria and will try to please to the best of his ability. One reason prices have gone up is that corporations are buying out vet practices. They are pushed to ask for a large array of tests that normally would be optional but most people don't know that.

Vet Recommendation

Usually when a Vet is more expensive there is a reason. They have state of the art equipment and a good reputation to be thorough and knowledgable. They use Isoflorin for anesthesia (same as what people get in hospitals) instead of that other stuff which makes the animals very groggy for a few days (been there, done that). It's also not that safe. Basically - you get what you pay for. I've heard nothing but negative feedback from American - including from people who used to work there. Always had great experiences with Mission Valley at Mowry and Mission.

When people say "they're not cheap" does that mean there is a big
difference from a normal priced vet? We just adopted a stray cat and
we need the full test/vaccine package including getting him "fixed"
eventually. I'd really like to find a vet that is normally priced
and offers good friendly service. I really liked Dr Metcalfe on
Grimmer, but he is no longer there. We tried American once, and were
not too pleased. I've been to vets that seem to charge 2x the going
rate.
Does the mobile (Dr Robin Teague)vet come to Fremont? Looks like
they're in Livermore but their fees are reasonable. I'll call
tomorrow but what was the experience like?

Dr. Robert Tisdale on Ellsworth Street in Mission San Jose. He has been my vet for over 20 years. He just celebrated his 25th anniversary in the same location. And the office staff is nice, too.

I agree with everything Gitta said. I was really impressed with how nicely and lovingly they handled my little Scruffy dog, as he tried to eat their hands. And they're not cheap.

Looking for daytime babysitting/childcare
|
|
I know they don't make house calls (or temple calls) but if you are looking for a babysitter for just a few hours at an odd time (middle of the day) you can always check with the Discovery Cove at the Family Resource Center - they have a limited number of kids they can take at one time but are licensed, open Mon-Fri during the day and good in a pinch - please call ahead to reserve a spot. The info is at http://www.fremont.gov/Community/FamilyResourceCenter/agenciesprogramsservices.htm#discoverycove

Yoga

Titera Dance at 37495 Niles Blvd. has a great yoga class taught by Niles instructor Julie Aragon Tues. mornings at 9 AM. It is a friendly drop in class where you can either pay by the class or month. She is a great instructor and teaches to all levels simultaneously. I also have a history of back problems and have not had one tweak that lasted more than a day or so since I started yoga. You can call Julie at 796-4638.

I'm looking for a venue to take yoga once or twice a week. An ideal setting would have a comfortable social atmosphere and an instructor with a fun loving, casual attitude.

In home care
|
|
A year and a half ago, my husband and I moved in with my father who has dementia and have been able to manage on our own so far. Thank you for your information and for sharing your experience. I'm sure we'll be using what you learned in the future. I can add to the care information you gave with the recommendation of a book called The 36 Hour Day by Nancy L. Mace and Peter Rabins published by Warner Books. We had a friend give us a copy and, in turn, we've told at least 4 dozen people about it. It answered a great many questions and is becoming dog earred from constant reference. Since many of our parents are living longer, there is a huge number of the population developing this problem; and, therefore, more and more help is becoming available. Still, it's not an easy thing to deal with. It takes patience and a sense of humor and helpers.

In home care
|
|
I hired 24-hour care for my mother in her home from January of 1992 until she died in January of 2004 from Alzheimer's Disease at the age of 95. She was also in reasonably good health except for the Alzheimer's. She had always wanted to remain in her home so I did my best to keep her there. I was very fortunate and lucky in finding reliable caregivers but it was very costly and I went though a lot of people before finally finding a strong, reliable staff of 3 caregivers that were with me for 12, 9 and 6 years, respectively. The last year I also used an agency in Pleasant Hill to fill in-my mother lived in the Oakland area. The agency charged me $150 per day. Caregivers are now subject to minimum wage so if you hire people above board, which I did, you will have to pay them from minimum wage to as much as $20 or $30 per hour. Fortunately my mother had money. We used it all and ended up taking out an equity line against her house to continue her care until she died. Hiring caregivers is a very costly endeavor. The last 7 months we also had Hospice-they were wonderful.
