Niles Clean-Up (3 replies)
I've peppered the e-group recently with comments about roadside garbage and derelict buildings in Niles. I got off my soapbox today and tackled the trash and weeds that ugh up our image. To start, I'm focusing on our front door  - the Niles Boulevard corridor from Mission to the car wash (and the wooden Niles sign hidden behind a tree). A couple of hardworking Niles folks pitched in this afternoon to weed, sweep and haul trash and wet leaves away from the sidewalk in front of the Henkel building.

I'm asking for more help. Please let me know if you will donate a dollar or two, have an empty dumpster available, trash and / or leaf bags, a pick-up truck for hauling refuse to the landfill, or a half-hour of spare time. If you are a landscaper and willing to donate some trimming, etc., you will earn much praise and admiration!

Some good neighbors and I are going door-to-door on Niles Blvd. this Sunday, February 26, asking for a donation of only $1 or $2 from each business to help pay for the initial clean-up, and a start-up fund for on-going maintenance

Please join me in helping Niles get ready for her close-up, as folks pour in for the glorious events produced by the Niles Essanay Silent Film Museum, Niles Main Street, Niles Merchants, the Niles Canyon Railway / Golden Spike Program, Michael McNevin, the City of Fremont, Niles Elementary School and all the other groups and individuals who make us great.

Niles will look mahvelous dahlings! Thank you. Cathy Lyn Harrison, Washburn

First of all, THANK YOU to you and for the Niles neighbors who pitched in to help you today and in the future to help to beautify Niles.  It is one thing to complain about something, it is quite another to take action to resolve a situation and my hat is off to you.

I will contribute in some of the areas mentioned in your message below.  I wanted to give you a public Thank You.  And we can talk privately off-group about where I, or my family, can help.

It is always appreciated when people put their elbow
grease where their mouth is and Cathy Lyn, you have
always been willing - I thank all the clean-up elves
for beginning the process / transformation. And those
who saw the WONDERFUL train send-off last week
probably knew this one was going to be brought up. The
surrounding area where the train platform is has a ton
of garbage and junk completely strewn around, makes me
think many people see it as a dumping grounds.

And not to take people away from the Hinky building -
ooops - Henckel building - which is the first thing
people will see coming into town...the train area
would be the next. I am busy until March 5th but I can
tackle it for a few hours at that point. We are
talking carts and carts worth of trash. I am guessing
there are safety issues involved - and maybe
trespassing unless you are there to specifically ride
the train - I don't know... so maybe the best
situation is to be there a few hours before the train
ride on the next train day when we are allowed to be
in the vicinity. Please let me know if any of you are
willing to be there at 8 a.m. to clean up for a couple
hours.... I say we are done by 9:45 and maybe do it
the next train day as well....

Please donate the following heavy duty items needed for on-going
Niles clean-ups:  rubber gloves, rubber boots, dust pans, rakes,
shovels, brooms, lawn leaf / trash bags, buckets and bottled drinking
water. I will gladly pick up any of these items you are willing to
donate. Thanks once more. Cathy Lyn Harrison, Washburn
